Note: The mini-LOTG were updated June 1 2010 to version 2010.2. The only change in this version (as compared to the May 2010 version) is that the new must-retreat-on-a-goal-kick rule applies to U8 and U9 only. This restriction was mistakenly omitted from the previous version. When in doubt - make sure you have version 2010.2.

There is one significant playing rule change for 2010:

U8 and U9 only: On a Goal Kick, too often the goalkeeper kicks the ball into play but does not kick the ball an appreciable distance. The opposing team, which is only 6 yards away, rushes in and forms an attack on the kicking team and out-of-position goalkeeper. In 2010, on the awarding of a goal kick the non-kicking team is to retreat to their half of play, thus leaving the kicking team an opportunity to put the ball in play, control the ball, and move the ball up-field.

Summary of Amendments – Version 2010, May 2010

  1. Law 6 – Used the standard soccer term “Club Linesmen” rather that “linesman” or “linesperson”.
  2. Law 10 –The maximum 5-goal differential rule is revoked.
  3. Law 16 – At the taking of a Goal Kick, the non-kicking team is to immediately retreat to their own half of the field.
  4. Law 10, 19 – In the event of a mis-match between teams, coaches are expected to take assertive action to prevent running up the score.
